There is no one you can trust less than a person who is in a position that they don’t want to be in or can’t fulfill. What you can trust about them is that they will be trying to get out of that position. How they will try is another question. There is the overt, the bombs, the shouting, etc. There is the subtle, the clues, the positions of eyes, wrinkles in the way that foreheads mumble to themselves in their own secret language, finger snaps and weight gain.
Like captured energy looking for a break in the cage they will design escape.
Iago uses this knowledge to his own advantage. His character, however, is more dangerous, though more trustworthy. He is not seeking an escape. However, he is formulating plans and manipulating realities for those around him. What does Iago want? This is the difficult question and the one that poses the most danger for those around him.
